The older New Brunswick streets still have prewar houses and small multi-family buildings with their original brick chimneys, and those older houses are where most of the city's brick chimneys stand. Many have been converted to gas or electric heat over the years, so we often find a flue still connected to a gas appliance it was never sized for, or a flue that is no longer connected to anything and has been left open to the weather. With a third of homes heated by electricity, plenty of buildings have no heating flue at all, and the venting job there is the dryer and the duct system. In larger buildings the dryer duct can be long, and a lint-packed run is both a fire risk and the reason laundry takes two cycles. Before working on a shared building we confirm who is responsible for the chimney or the vents, since in a rental that may be the owner rather than the tenant.
