The 1950s houses tend to have thinner postwar brick with clay tile, and often a single stack doing two jobs, with the fireplace on one side and the heating system on the other. Most of these homes now run on gas. When the old boiler goes and a small water heater is left alone in a flue built for something far bigger, the exhaust cools before it can clear the top and leaves condensation on the liner. In the two to four family buildings a flue can run right beside a neighbor's, and a crack between them cannot be seen from either living room. The camera is how we find it.

Our water heater is the only thing left in the old furnace chimney. Is that a problem?
It can be. A water heater on its own puts out far less heat than the boiler that flue was sized for, so the exhaust cools and condenses on the way up. That water attacks mortar and clay tile from the inside. A properly sized liner usually solves it, and the camera shows whether you need one.
