Cherry Hill is where our crew starts the day. The township grew out of Delaware Township farmland, took its present name in a 1961 referendum and put up most of its homes between 1950 and 1980. Half the houses here were built in 1968 or earlier, so plenty of flues have already outlived the furnace or fireplace they were built around.

The code allows 35 feet of duct and takes 5 feet off for every right-angle elbow, so we measure the run as well as clean it.

Our 1960s house switched to gas years ago. What could be wrong with the chimney?
Often nothing you would notice from the living room. A flue built for an old coal or oil boiler is wider than a gas furnace or water heater needs, so the exhaust cools on the way up and can leave water behind on the tile. Over the years that moisture loosens mortar joints. A camera pass shows whether the liner is still sound and still the right size.
There is a metal fireplace in our 1980s home. Can it be repaired?
Sometimes. A factory-built fireplace is a tested system, and its panels, seams and chimney sections are meant to be replaced with the maker's own parts. For units from the 1970s and 1980s those parts are often out of production, and then a new listed unit is the safer path. After the inspection we tell you which case yours is.
Do you clean dryer vents in Cherry Hill condos and townhouses?
Yes. In attached homes and condo buildings the dryer duct often travels farther and bends more than it would in a detached house. We clean the whole run out to the hood and measure it, because a run longer than 35 feet has to carry a label near the dryer stating its equivalent length.
We are selling our Cherry Hill home. Is a chimney inspection required?
New Jersey requires a smoke alarm, carbon monoxide alarm and fire extinguisher certificate before a sale, but the law does not require a chimney inspection. Many buyers ask for one anyway, and NFPA 211, the industry standard, recommends a Level 2 inspection when a home changes hands. Book it a few weeks before closing so any repair can be finished in time.
